Simulated Maintenance Strategy
Test a routine against an Optimal Benchmark (swap chain at 0.5%, lube every 200 km).
Financial Comparison
Running total of what you spend on the drivetrain for Shimano Ultegra Di2 (R8100).

For each strategy, the engine works out how fast the chain wears from your riding conditions, cleaning frequency, and lube type, then steps through every replacement from 0 km out to the distance you picked.
Most of our multipliers and assumptions come from the work of Adam Kerin on Zero Friction Cycling.
1. Baseline & Wax
How much longer a chain stays on the bike past the 0.5% mark before it gets replaced.
2. Condition Wear Multipliers
How fast grit, rain, and mud chew through a chain compared to clean, dry pavement.
3. Clean & Lube Multipliers
How wear speeds up when grit stays inside the links and lube runs dry.
4. Cascade Survival (Chains)
How many chains a cassette or chainring set lasts before hooked teeth force you to buy new ones.
Why is the “Optimal Line” so hard to follow?
Swapping your chain on time and lubing regularly looks easy on a chart. In practice, most riders miss the window for three reasons:
Hardly anyone keeps an honest count of the kilometers since their last lube or chain swap.
Rain, dust, and mud chew through parts a lot faster than dry roads, so your chain dies sooner.
Bikes don’t have a service light, and logging rides and maintenance by hand gets old fast.
Automate It with BikeVet
BikeVet tracks wear quietly in the background, so you get a heads-up before an elongated chain chews through your cassette. And it does it for every component on your bike.
- 🔄 Syncs with Strava
Pulls your rides automatically. No spreadsheets, no mental odometer math.
- 🌧️ Weather Aware
Adjusts wear rates when you ride through rain, gravel dust, or mud.
- 🔔 Smart Reminders
Tells you when to re-lube, when to check a component, and much more.
Free for your main bike on base components — no account required.

Replacement Costs:
Chain $40
Cassette $120
Chainrings $180
Full Drivetrain: $340
1. Chain Replacement Intervals
Swap at 0.5% wear to prevent unnecessary wear on your cassette and chainrings.
| Riding Condition | Wear Multiplier | 0.5% Interval Standard Oil Lube | 0.5% Interval Immersion / Drip Wax |
|---|---|---|---|
| ☀️ Dry Tarmac / Hardpack | 1.0x | 3,500 km | 5,833 km |
| 🏜️ Dusty / Dry Gravel | 1.35x | 2,593 km | 4,321 km |
| 🌧️ Wet Road / Rain | 1.8x | 1,944 km | 3,241 km |
| 🌧️ Muddy / Grinding Paste | 2.5x | 1,400 km | 2,333 km |
2. Clean & Lube Schedule
- Dry Conditions: Wipe and re-lube every 200–250 km.
- Wet or Gritty Rides: Wipe the chain down right after the ride and top up lube or wax.
- Gauge Check: Measure wear every 500 km once you’re past halfway on expected chain life.
3. Chain Swap Log (Check Off)
Tired of tracking rides on paper? BikeVet automatically tracks them from your Strava rides and local weather data to provide timely maintenance alerts.
