The Cost of Neglect

Play with the numbers and see why proper maintenance and replacing your chain on time are the best investments you can make for your bike.

How the algorithm works

For each strategy, the engine works out how fast the chain wears from your riding conditions, cleaning frequency, and lube type, then steps through every replacement from 0 km out to the distance you picked.

Where does data come from?

Most of our multipliers and assumptions come from the work of Adam Kerin on Zero Friction Cycling.

1. Baseline & Wax

0.60 = 40% slower wear (~67% longer life)
Threshold Distance Multipliers

How much longer a chain stays on the bike past the 0.5% mark before it gets replaced.

2. Condition Wear Multipliers

How fast grit, rain, and mud chew through a chain compared to clean, dry pavement.

3. Clean & Lube Multipliers

How wear speeds up when grit stays inside the links and lube runs dry.

4. Cascade Survival (Chains)

How many chains a cassette or chainring set lasts before hooked teeth force you to buy new ones.

Why is the “Optimal Line” so hard to follow?

Swapping your chain on time and lubing regularly looks easy on a chart. In practice, most riders miss the window for three reasons:

Mental Odometer

Hardly anyone keeps an honest count of the kilometers since their last lube or chain swap.

Weather Changes the Math

Rain, dust, and mud chew through parts a lot faster than dry roads, so your chain dies sooner.

No timely alerts

Bikes don’t have a service light, and logging rides and maintenance by hand gets old fast.

Automate It with BikeVet

BikeVet tracks wear quietly in the background, so you get a heads-up before an elongated chain chews through your cassette. And it does it for every component on your bike.

  • 🔄 Syncs with Strava

Pulls your rides automatically. No spreadsheets, no mental odometer math.

  • 🌧️ Weather Aware

Adjusts wear rates when you ride through rain, gravel dust, or mud.

  • 🔔 Smart Reminders

Tells you when to re-lube, when to check a component, and much more.
